George Ellis Johnson, Sr worked as a research chemist for Samuel B. Fuller, who owned a cosmetics firm, until 1954 when he borrowed $500 to start his own business, Johnson Products. He marketed Ultra Wave, Ultra Sheen, and his most famous, Afro Sheen. Johnson Products was the only sponsor of Soul Train and in 1971 the first black-owned business listed on the American Stock Exchange.
